xx Eagles Top Chiefs for Sixth Win in a Row | 20 Jan 10

Basketball
Emmanuel Tiluscar has been carrying the scoring load for Atlantic most of this season, but Tuesday night the Eagles' 6-foot-3 guard watched mostly from the bench in foul trouble and was limited to only five points.

No problem, said Travon Shuler, who scored 23 points to lead Atlantic to a 77-61 win against district rival Santaluces.

Senior forward Leroy Haye and junior center Rich Myrthil complemented Shuler's scoring outburst by scoring 12 points each.

Atlantic's bench also made significant contributions as 11 players scored for the Eagles, who outshot Santaluces from the field 28-18, including five three-point shots.

Tiluscar made his only basket with 6:49 remaining to give Atlantic a 61-45 lead.

It's the sixth consecutive win for Atlantic (12-6) and the third time this season that the Eagles have beaten Santaluces (9-7), which defeated Atlantic in the district finals and the Class 6A regional playoffs last season.

Santaluces trailed only 35-34 at halftime, but Atlantic stretched its lead to 10 points by the end of the third quarter and handed the Chiefs their third consecutive loss.

xx Leonard Boys' Basketball Team Has Three-point Shot | 18 Jan 10

Basketball
By Steve Dorsey

Following his team's 93-86 win against John I. Leonard last week, Dwyer boys' basketball coach Fred Ross said that Leonard is the best shooting team from three-point range that he has seen in quite a while.

Leonard made 12 shots from three-point range against Dwyer, but the Lancers lost the game at the free-throw line, where they missed 19 shots in a seven-point loss. Three nights later, however, the Lancers made almost 75 percent of their free throws in a 26-point win against Forest Hill. Earlier this season, Leonard lost a close district game to West Boca when the Lancers made less than 50 percent of their free throws.

No wonder Leonard coach Jim Howell is perplexed at his team's inconsistency at the free-throw line.

"It's bitten us in the butt in all of our losses," Howell said of his team, which is 10-5 entering this week. "It's a mental thing with us, and it becomes contagious."

All of Leonard's losses have been by single-digit margins to above-.500 teams, including Dwyer and Summit Ch

Four Palm Beach County teams survived the second round of the playoffs and kept their seasons alive for at least one more week.  For the small schools (Glades Central, American Heritage and Glades Day) another win would send them to Orlando for the state championships.  So who is the next school to give up 250+ yards to Kelvin Taylor?  Which team’s DBs get to watch L.J. Thomas launch passes over their heads to Greg Dent?  Who gets an early start on the ride home after playing a 38-minute game against Dwyer?

Regional Finals

Class4A

New Smyrna Beach (8-4) at Dwyer (11-1)

How they got here: New Smyrna Beach beat South Fork by 14, then topped Melbourne-Palm Bay, 8-7. Dwyer had running-clock victories over Hollywood Hills and Fort Lauderdale-Stranahan.

Winner plays: At home against Seffner-Armwood or Punta Gorda-Charlotte, Dec. 11th.

xx Matt Elam - A Closer Look | 17 Nov 09

Football
A few excerpts from ESPN RISE's featured article on Dwyer RB/LB/S Matt Elam.

By Jon Mahoney
ESPN RISE Magazine

Rated the nation's No. 13 recruit in the ESPNU 150, the Florida commit plays with an unmatched intensity whether he's lined up at running back, linebacker or safety for Dwyer.

The source of Elam's passion is family. Football is a way for him to make his mom, Addie Lewis, happy. He looks up to his older brother, Abram, a safety with the Cleveland Browns who offers advice on how to become a better person and player. And the memory of his late sister, Christina, and brother, Donald, inspires him to utilize all the gifts he's been given, whether it's pushing through a grueling summer workout or playing each down like it's his last.

Christina was only 12 when she was killed by a stray bullet at a local playground in January 1999. Elam, then 8, and Abram rushed from their home to discover their dying sister.

Elam struggled to suppress the pain. The loss of a sister he looked up to made him angry and caused him to act out of character. Little things set him off, and he started getting into fights in school.

"It was hard for me," says Elam. "I felt like I had nothing left."

They advance as the state’s finalists for the nationwide award, which will be given Dec. 11 in New York at college football’s Heisman ceremony, which will be televised by ESPN. Wendy’s will narrow the finalist field to 12 before that event and those 12 will each receive a $2,000 donation to their school.  The male and female winners will each get a $10,000 gift to their school.
